"What the fuck are you doing?" Brian raises an eyebrow at his younger partner as he watches him stop right in front of a sloping hill; the view of the White Mountains behind him is magnificent with its lushly-dotted landscape of pine trees and snow-capped peaks. The blond beams at him, although the smile is partially obscured by the large pair of amber-colored ski goggles he is presently wearing. He lets out a joyous cry as he abruptly throws himself down onto the snowy, frozen ground. Brian looks more befuddled than amused, but Justin doesn't seem to mind. He’s wearing a padded ski suit and jacket, he’s with the man he loves and they're here, in a lovely, secluded resort amongst the Vermont mountains, where they had spent their first week alone together years before. The first time they had travelled here was more than ten years ago, and back then all they could think about was sex, fucking, relaxing in the room’s Jacuzzi, fucking again, and – just to keep Justin’s strength up – a little food, and then MORE fucking; well, you get the picture. The first time they hardly left their room.

When the time was right for them to take another winter vacation together this year, however, and Brian suggested that they seek out a more high-end resort this time, Justin had protested in disappointment, the romantic in him telling Brian he wanted to relive their first time together on vacation and return to the same ski resort they had stayed at the first time. And Justin had found the perfect type of persuasion to eventually bring Brian around to his way of thinking; the same method Brian had told him to use to convince his former classmates at St. James to check out the new Gay/Straight Student Alliance – although the technique wound up being much more effective with Brian than it had been with his fellow students.

After a short amount of research online, Justin had been delighted to discover that the inn had become even more gay-friendly since their last trip, now providing special wedding packages and promotional weekend jaunts advertising exclusively on gay-oriented websites. In keeping with a lot of other establishments in the state, they had also become more environmentally friendly, touting on their website a “Green Award” they had recently received for their remodeling efforts and uses of green technology.

Justin was especially intrigued with a “Back to Basics” week-long package the inn was promoting online as a “getaway from all the hectic hustle and bustle of a fast-paced, urban life.” They promised to provide a couple with the means to escape to a simpler time and temporarily forget all their troubles. Brian – normally a very meticulous person when it came to researching information before he delved any further – was too preoccupied with wrapping up some last-minute work at Kinnetik before leaving on their trip to give their accommodations much thought, and the vision of fucking Justin’s brains out all week long pushed any worries out of his mind. He figured that Justin was level-headed and sensible enough to make a wise decision for both of them.

What he didn't anticipate, though – and what Justin himself had no way of knowing – was that their ‘back-to-basics’ escape would wind up, instead, to be a nightmare consisting of a rustic, two-room cabin a half-mile from the inn, with only a bed (a double at that!), a small, round table and two chairs for meals, and a small bedside nightstand with their single source of electricity – a kerosene lamp. Thankfully, they at least had plenty of wood for the fireplace in the bedroom, so they wouldn’t freeze to death, but in keeping with their Little House on the Prairie’ environment, their only supply of water was an old-fashioned, hand pump located about ten yards away from the front door.

Despite Brian’s vehement, immediate demand to be placed instead in a luxury room at the inn, to his utter dismay he was told all the rooms at the inn were booked. And when he told them in no uncertain terms that he would go find somewhere else to stay then, he found out that a quickly approaching storm might soon make the only way down the mountain impassable. So here he was – stuck with a cabin worthy of Ma and Pa Ingalls themselves. And with a man who was apparently reliving his childhood at the moment.

"What does it look like I'm doing?" Justin replies with a smirk, bringing Brian back to the present. He reclines on the thick blanket of snow by stretching his left leg out in front of him, while holding his right one straight up in the air, using his hand to help brace it as if he were a gawky ballerina trying to warm up and stretch before his big recital. "Come on! Snap out of it, sourpuss," he teases Brian. He smiles over at him impishly before suddenly, without warning, he bursts into song, a song that Brian has heard over and over again on the local radio stations lately to the point where it almost makes him physically ill:

“Let it go, let it go!
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door!

I don't care
What they're going to say
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway!”

Brian holds his gloved hands over his ears to try and drown it out, but it’s no use. Justin’s voice is clear and strong as he continues toward his grand finale. Even though his lover can actually handle a tune quite well, the song itself still causes Brian to scowl down at him, and makes him want to throw a giant snowball at Justin; anything to make it stop.

“Would you shut the fuck up?” he finally growls to interrupt him. “Do you want to start an avalanche?!”

Justin grins back at him, but he thankfully does as Brian asks; and even though Brian is definitely grateful that he has stopped, he can’t help thinking as Justin continues to sit there in the snow, his legs now folded under him, Indian style, how fucking adorable he looks all bundled up like some giant stuffed animal. He feels his cock twitch of all things as he thinks about taking his little furry toy back to their godforsaken cabin a short distance away and ‘unstuffing’ him in front of the fire to generate some much-needed body heat. Just the thought seems to make him feel just a bit warmer as he opens his mouth to suggest it, but Justin stops him.

“I want my picture taken,” he tells Brian unexpectedly.

“Justin, it’s fucking freezing out here!”

“Please…” is the slightly muffled plea as Brian sighs in resignation. Anything to get them closer to their only source of warmth.

“Give me your cellphone,” he tells the blond as Justin beams.

Deciding he won’t be able to reach his phone too easily in his jacket pocket while he’s sitting there, Justin begins to rise to stand when somehow he manages to trip on his own feet and abruptly topples backward with a startled cry and begins rolling down the moderately sloping hill.

“Justin!” Brian shouts in alarm as he rushes over to the edge and watches as his partner’s body rolls and rolls down the slope. “Fuck!” He hurries as best he can to catch up with him, but it’s difficult even with his boots on. They provide just enough tread, however, for him to finally catch up with his partner – just as his slender body comes to a stop in front of a large pine tree.

“Justin, are you all right?” Brian asks breathlessly as he reaches him. He’s relieved to see his eyes open underneath the goggles as he hears a groan from him. “Did you hurt yourself?” he asks as he reaches down to gently remove Justin’s goggles from his face.

“Only my dignity,” Justin replies, disgusted with his clumsiness. “I’m just a little sore. Can you help me up?”

Brian nods as he slides one arm around Justin’s arms to help him rise, only to stop when he hears Justin cry out in pain when he tries to put some weight on his right foot. “What is it?” he asks in concern.

“Better put me back down on the ground,” he tells Brian as he winces. “I think I hurt my foot.”

-An hour later-

"Can you move your ankle at all, Mr. Taylor?" a tall, red-haired guy asks him; Justin is presently propped up into a sitting position with his back to the pine tree.

"A little, but it hurts like hell," Justin hisses at the hotel’s paramedic as the man gingerly probes around his thick, wool sock; Justin’s boot had been removed temporarily so the man could better inspect it. "Looks like it's either badly sprained or maybe even broken," the guy finally decides. "We'll have to transport you down to a clinic in town, though, so they can do an x-ray to confirm it.”

"And just how are you planning on doing that? We're in the middle of nowhere!" Brian snaps; partly because he’s angry at having to be in such an isolated location, but mainly because he’s worried about his lover.

"Well, Mr.…, uh…,” the red haired guy turns to Brian and hesitates.

"Kinney," Brian huffs as the redhead nods.

"We'll arrange for proper transportation, Mr. Kinney, don't worry," the man reassures him, sensing how concerned he is about the blond. Reaching in his pocket to retrieve his cellphone, he presses one of the speed dial buttons and exchanges a few words with someone on the other end as Justin breathes painfully nearby, Brian’s hand resting on his shoulder for comfort.

"Okay, will do," the paramedic eventually concludes the call before hanging up. "They’ll be sending a 4-wheel-drive vehicle shortly," he informs them, pulling out a stack of papers from his backpack. “Before they get here, I’m going to need to ask you a few questions about your injury, since it occurred here on the resort’s property," he tells Justin. The blond shifts his body slightly and then groans at the pain that shoots up suddenly from his leg.

"What do you need to know?" Brian intervenes as he reaches over to grasp Justin’s hand; he feels Justin grip it tightly in return for support. “I’m his husband,” he explains as the paramedic nods. Initially, saying that out loud used to make Brian uncomfortable for some reason; now he says it without a second’s hesitation as if it’s the most natural thing in the world. “Legally,” he elaborates, letting the man know he can handle any medical matters that might arise if Justin is unable to.

"Lucky guy," the redhead murmurs with a smile, as Brian’s gaydar pings. But he isn’t about to do anything to verify that; he doesn’t need or want to anymore.

Justin smiles over at Brian with watery eyes despite his pain, clearly touched by Brian's rare public statement. "Maybe NOT so lucky now," he whispers to the paramedic, just before the rescue vehicle pulls up in the snow. Within a few minutes, he is hoisted into the back of the vehicle on a portable stretcher as Brian jumps into the back with him, and the group heads carefully back down toward the main roadway into town.

-Later that night-

"Are you pissed at me?" Justin asks as he hobbles into the cabin’s bedroom on wooden crutches given to him by the clinic.

Brian lounges in bed with his back to the head board. He gazes into his partner's eyes, following him intently as he approaches the bed.

The younger man looks exhausted, with his right ankle wrapped in a bandage; he has a couple of angry-looking bruises he had sustained during the fall earlier that were now turning more purple. He's wearing a pair of his favorite, loose sweatpants, the pair that has a hole in them near his crotch, and with the cabin now nice and toasty due to the roaring fire in the room, he’s presently shirtless, which Brian finds totally hot.

"Why would I be pissed at you?" Brian replies in surprise as he rises from the bed to help Justin, who hops over on one leg closer to the mattress. Taking the crutches and propping them up against the nearby wall, Brian helps his husband sit down first before gently swinging his legs around so Justin’s sitting up in the bed against the headboard. He scoots over just enough to slide in behind the blond’s smaller frame, linking his arms around his waist to cradle him against his chest as Justin’s legs nestle in the ‘V’ of his lower body.

“Justin?” Brian calls out softly when he doesn’t receive a response. “Why would I be upset with you?” He presses. He can hear him sigh in reaction after a few seconds.

"Because we're leaving here tomorrow, and I fucked up the last day of our vacation with my stupid ideas," Justin whispers after a while, blinking to hold back his tears of regret.

"You didn't fuck up anything, Sunshine," Brian replies softly as his fingers trace Justin's jawline. “You didn’t set out to wind up with a broken ankle. You'll be bad as new in no time, trust me. And if you ask ME, it was still better than an avalanche.”

That evokes a smile from Justin at last. “Well, when you put it that way…” He twists his head to meet the pair of well-loved hazel ones as the two tenderly kiss. Justin sighs in contentment then, the pain killer starting to do its job as he begins to get sleepy.

As he feels his eyelids growing heavy and he’s about to succumb to the drug’s effects, he swears he can hear Brian murmur, “You know it doesn’t matter where we are – or how simple or luxurious our accommodations are – as long as you’re there with me.”

He smiles then as he finally drifts off to sleep, thinking this might be the best vacation ever.

I have trouble picturing Brian staying anywhere rustic. Justin, of course, made the best of it. Shame he broke his ankle. As always another great story, with a unique storyline.

Poor Justin he doesn't do things by half. At least it was only his ankle that he hurt it could have been worse. Sweet moments with the guys.
