Part 1

Three years earlier

Final Cut Productions office, Hollywood, CA.

Justin Taylor's POV

"The producers will see you now, Mr. Taylor. Down the hallway, last door at the end,” the receptionist instructs me without lifting her head from her desk. I nod at her and walk down a rather spacious corridor decorated with huge posters of all of the studio's prominent stars, heading toward an imposing-looking office door at the end.

Here I am, a graduate of PIFA Drama School in Pittsburgh trying my luck in Hollywood. Well… It's not the most glamorous job I had hoped for, but I'm only twenty-two and at this stage I can only hope it might just be the first step. I've had countless acting jobs before, but they were mostly school plays and a couple of small roles in some student short films I did while I was still in drama school as a favor to a friend. Let's just say that friend did me a few 'late night’ favors, too, back then, but I was too scared or confused or both to grasp what it really meant.

Now as I walk along the corridor, hoping for a fresh start, I suddenly catch a glimpse of my reflection in a huge mirror that's located right next to the 'big bosses' office. Fuck. I hope they won't play the age card against me here. My younger looks started out as a blessing, but now it's somewhat of a double-edged sword, because recently it’s only landed me mainly ‘high school boy’ types of roles.

Clutching my resume and my head shots in my hand, I take a deep breath before raising my hand to knock on the door.

I'm ushered in by two guys. They smile and introduce themselves as Ted Schmidt –a somber looking but rather sharp, mid 40's man - and Emmett Hunnycut – a distinct contrast to the other man with his tall appearance and his talkative boisterousness and vibrancy.

They are the head writers and the producers of the show, and according to my manager who booked me the audition for this role a few weeks ago, they are not just business partners.

After we exchange a few words – as with every casting interview – I feel myself becoming more at ease when they ask me to read for them, and I’m cautiously optimistic when they ask me to wait outside their office for a bit afterward. They call me back in eventually, and when I'm told that I'll be given a standard contract for the remaining episodes of this season with an option to extend that contract into next season, I try to contain my elation. Inside, however, my heart is beating furiously with excitement.

I sign on the dotted line and smile at them. It's a small role, BUT it's in one of the longest-running day time soaps entitled Days in the Sun. It's one of those shows my former roommate from PIFA claimed she never watched, but I knew she kept glancing at the TV screen from behind her pre-med text books whenever it was on. She just didn’t want to admit it.

I bet Daphne would be thrilled, then, to know her former roommate had landed the role of Max Millian, a twenty-one-year-old rich kid from Roseville, California who just arrived back in his home town after getting a degree in business from an exclusive, Ivy League university back east.

"Here are your first scenes for this week," Mr. Schmidt, who insisted I call him Ted, tells me as he hands me the script.

"Take your time to get to know this guy," Emmett, the other producer, completes his partner’s sentence.
"WE like him," he continues mysteriously with a wink. Fuck, are they talking about the character, or about me? I hold back that thought as I nod politely at them, flashing my beaming, ‘sweet-boy-next-door’ smile before turning to leave.

As I turn around to walk out of the office, a tall god of a man walks in, wearing dark aviator sunglasses and a baseball cap. I notice he's wearing a pair of worn out jeans and a gray t-shirt, and that he's sporting a bit of facial scruff, just before I not so gracefully bump into him, since I’m too busy staring at how amazing he looks, even casually dressed.

"Sorry," I blurt out, suddenly feeling like one of the high school boys I’m often forced to play, instead of a man in his twenties.

The man peers down at me through his mirrored glasses, making me nervous as I stare back at my own reflection. I can’t tell what he’s thinking, but I see one elegant eyebrow arch upward in reaction.

“Brian! Perfect timing! Come on in…" I hear Emmett's voice greeting him, and then my mouth hangs open in realization. “You can meet our newest cast member.”

Oh, shit, it’s that actor Daphne kept rambling about… Brian Kinney. I've never been a big fan of soap operas, but now that I’m standing so close to the guy I can see what she meant. Even with his tousled look and his somewhat cool demeanor, I can feel there's something about him… maybe it's just in my mind, though. I mean this guy has been a cast member here for what? 15 years? And I’m going to be a newbie in a small, reoccurring role. We might not even have one scene together, and I…I don't really know what's going through my head now. I do know that there's a distinctive itch in my cock as the guy turns to me and reaches his hand towards mine without even taking his cap or sunglasses off.

"Brian Kinney, welcome aboard," he says in a low, slightly rugged voice.

"Justin Taylor, nice to be here," I manage somehow to answer politely.

"I see you’ve already met SchmidtCutt," he quips.

"Who?" I ask in confusion.

"Our producers, Ted Schmidt and Emmett Honeycutt, the guys who sign our checks. Well…MY check, anyway. So try to play nice with them,” he instructs me with a smirk. He turns his attention back to the other two men. "So what's up, boys?" he drawls.

“We made a few changes we need to discuss with you before the next taping tomorrow,” Ted explains. He turns briefly to me with a smile. “I think we’re done with you for the day, Justin. Why don’t you head back out and start going over your lines in the meantime?”

I nod with a nervous smile as I take one last glimpse at the incredible-looking man I had just bumped into – literally – and with another nod at Emmett, I turn and head out of the office.

As I sit in my small living room area later that day, chewing on a tuna sandwich with the script lying on my knees, I instinctively gasp as my eyes study the first paragraph of the scene:

The Rose Bowl, Rosewell's local café, interior, daylight:
Max walks into the café. He notice his high school sweetheart, Joslyn Fox, sitting on the bar stool. He approaches her and kisses her on the mouth.

I stare at the words, my mouth hanging open in dread.

FUCK! What did I get myself into?

TBH…

I'm reading this at nearly 2 in the morning and it keep me alert enough to read it. I'm a great fan of AU and you provide some of the best possibilities with the characters. I've only read a few of Brian and Justin as actors and I love them. This is a nice start and I look forward to more.

Poor Justin - having to kiss a girl on his first day in the soap opera.

Loved the reference to Cowlip with 'Schmidtcutt.' So funny!

Nice start to this fic. ♥

My, what an original idea! Let's hope the scene changes to one that will require less acting on Justin's part. hint hint.
