Part 2
"I don't think I want to go, Em." Justin smiles fretfully at his friend.
"Come on, sweetie. It's been three years. I know you still think about Daphne. How can you not? She was your best friend and… that night was such a terrible experience, but maybe if we hang out with a few friends and watch the Pride march you might feel a bit better," Emmett replies.
"Maybe just for a little while. Plus I have this school project to finish." Justin shrugs.
"Good!" Emmett answers. "I'm so proud of you for working toward your Master's degree in visual arts here at Carnegie Mellon, by the way," he tells him.
"And I'm proud of you for building your own catering business from scratch," Justin replies sincerely. "I only wish we could find you your Mr. Dreamboat," he continues with half a smile.
"Don't you start with the Mr. Dreamboat again." Emmett frowns dramatically. "But while we're on the subject, how about you? Seeing as that hot detective gave you his card."
"Come on, let's go," Justin responds, choosing to ignore his friend's remark. "I want to see the floats."
_ _ _ _
"What the fuck are those guys doing here?" Emmett wonders curiously as he recognizes two tall figures in the crowd.
"Fuck me!" Justin says in shock as his gaze falls upon Detective's Kinney tall figure towering above the crowd, dressed in tight blue jeans and a moss green-colored sleeveless top exposing his toned, nicely tanned arms. Justin notices that Detective Kinney is wearing aviator sunglasses and his chestnut-colored hair frames his strong facial features just the right way.
Justin swallows hard, but keeps still as much as he can. "I have no idea," he says, "but I'm not interested."
"The hell you aren't," Emmett teases.
Justin harrumphs. "Speak for yourself. The other guy seems to be kinda interested in you," Justin says.
"Kinney's partner? Fff… he'll never get out of the closet, trust me," Emmett remarks but then tugs on his friend's arm. "I think we've been spotted."
"Are you following us, Detectives?" Emmett asks while Justin tries not to stare at Detective Kinney's abs. This guy is definitely not just another undercover cop, he thinks to himself.
"I guess so," Brian answers.
"You're kidding, right?" Justin replies, his voice trembling unexpectedly.
"It's a force of habit," Detective Boyd answers instead as Brian keeps scanning the crowd.
"Any breakthrough in the case so far?" Justin inquires.
"Not recently," Brian answers matter-of-factly. "But then we've been coming here to these Pride marches for the past two years and no luck yet. With the case, I mean."
"This is getting awkward," Emmett whispers in Justin's ear with a slight grin, waving a little rainbow flag at him.
Justin feels his heart racing when this image suddenly sparks a sliver of another memory in his mind. He closes his eyes as he tries to get rid of the disturbing image of Chris Hobbs holding a handgun in the darkness outside Hope House amid the ambulance sirens and quiet agony.
He silently scoffs. Get a hold of yourself, Justin. There's no way in hell that a guy like Chris Hobbs would ever show up at a Pride March.
"Justin, honey? Are you okay?" Emmett asks.
"Yeah, I think it's probably a bit too much for me after all. Sorry, I thought I was up for this. I think I might head back home," Justin answers quietly as he opens his eyes. He nods at Emmett and turns around on his heels, but loses his balance and feels like he's about to trip.
Brian notices it and quickly reaches out to hold onto the young man before he falls flat on the pavement.
"How stupid of me. I'm sorry," Justin murmurs.
"Are you okay?" Emmett sounds worried.
"I'm fine. I think I just need to sit down and have something to drink." He smiles and frees himself from Detective Kinney's arms.
"There's a diner not so far away from here," Brian informs him. "I'll take you there right now."
"Oh, there's no need, Detective," Justin tries to protest.
"Yes there is." Brian slightly raises his voice. "I think we need to talk."
