"I'm too old to wear a stupid costume," Gus said while he was sitting on a high stool in
my studio. I watched as the kid skillfully moved his pencil over the sketch pad.

"Costumes are fun, though," I replied. "It's like you get to be someone you're not for a
day or two."

"But it's for babies," the ten-year-old answered. He then reached his hand towards the
bowl of cheerios I had just placed on the table.

I smiled at him, but didn't say anything. Gus was definitely his father's son: The guy
who refused to be someone he's not.

"Mel invited us to a party at their house on Sunday," I told Brian over the breakfast
table. I looked through the huge kitchen window and noticed that there was still quite a
bit of snow on the front lawn.

"Mel?" Brian snorted, folding his newspaper, and putting in down.

"Yeah, she wants the kids to keep the tradition of Purim," I told him.

"What the fuck is that?" Brian questioned, accompanied by his trademark raised-
eyebrow.

"It's a holiday. It's where they wear funny costumes and have a party," I explained,
"and you DO like parties."

Brian gazed at me and I couldn't help it, I had to reach out to him from across the table
and kiss him on his lips. As I did I tasted coffee and guava juice in my mouth.

"What was that for?" he asked, still holding me.

"For just being you," I whispered into his ear as I grabbed his Armani tie, "and for being
such a great dad to your son."
