Part 4
"Justin? It's Lindsay. Please come out of the bathroom, honey. I need to speak to you." The tall blond woman is standing outside the locked door in Justin's studio after Emmett called her over to try and calm Justin down. After all, she helped him a lot when he first came to New York. She was originally from Pittsburgh and had been friends with Brian way before he met Justin. Over the years she apparently developed a soft spot for the young blond which continued even after she moved to New York City and opened her own gallery here.
"There's nothing to talk about," Justin finally answers from behind the door.
"Yes there is, Justin. There's something I need to tell you. There's something you need to know," Lindsay says softly.
The door opens slightly.
Lindsay gently hugs Justin.
"What could you possibly say that I haven't already heard?" He says in a broken voice as he steps out and leads Lindsay to the sitting area next to his workspace.
"I know it's not easy for you and there are obviously a lot of things still to deal with but… I think you should know that Brian probably had his own reasons to do that," Lindsay says quietly.
"I can't believe this, Lindsay! Why are you defending him? The guy is a jerk. I can't believe I'm saying this, but my dad was right. Brian Kinney is a fucking jerk."
"He is," Lindsay continues. "But he's also desperate."
"He sure has a weird way of showing that." Justin suddenly takes his engagement band off his finger and slams it on the table.
"I know how you feel, more than you think." Lindsay lets out a breath. "But what would you say if I told you your fiancé already had a son?"
"He's not my fiancé anymore, apparently, but to answer your question I… I wouldn't say anything. Instead I would fly to West Virginia myself right now, track him down and cut both his fucking balls, sack and cock off. Then I'll brink the whole thing to my studio, paint it in glossy black spray paint, frame it and hang it here on the main wall. I'll call that piece "The Boy with the Thorn at His Side," Justin snarks.
"I'd love to show such a fine exhibit at my gallery as well, but not so fast; hear me out first," Lindsay pleads, looking right at Justin.
"Brian and I knew each other twelve years ago, you know that, right? But what you don't know because he obviously never told you is that I had a partner as well. Her name was Mel. Mel and I really loved each other and wanted to have a family, but since I can't have kids Mel convinced Brian to be the sperm donor for her. Her only condition was that he would have no parental rights or anything."
"Wow, that's intense," Justin says when Lindsay takes a moment to compose herself.
"Shortly after the baby, Gus, was born Mel took the baby and moved to Florida with her mother. I never saw her or Gus again." She continues. "So maybe that's Brian's way of compensating himself, having a kid, being a dad."
Justin shrugs.
"Brian was scared shitless of any long term commitment." He tells her quietly. "No matter how many times we spoke about it he would always give me that old 'marriage is a doomsday machine' crap. Even after he eventually proposed and after we moved to our country house he said he would never, ever have kids. I didn't want to bother him too much with that at first, but when I started to talk to him about surrogacy again after a while he kept refusing so I decided to let it go. But…now… this? I never expected this. Talk about double standard." Justin's harsh words cut the air like a knife.
"Emmett, book me a flight to Pittsburgh for tomorrow morning." Justin takes a deep breath as he turns his face away from Lindsay to look at his friend standing quietly by the door.
"Make it two, you're coming with me, of course," he continues in a shallow voice.
"What about your fall show?" Emmett asks.
"Fuck the fall show! I have much more pressing issues at hand right now. I'm going to find the son of a bitch and confront him. I want some answers," Justin growls.
