"Welcome Mr. Kinney," A voice welcomes him as he steps inside a long black winding corridor.
As he contemplates his next step in the clustered space a ray of ice blue spotlight pierces the darkness as if to show him the way.
"What… Where Am I?" He hisses.
"You're in the maze," The voice informs.
"How did I get here?" He asks. His own voice bounces off the walls creating an echo in the deafening silence.
"You chose to be here," The voice says.
"I don't remember that…" he blurs out.
"Why don't I just show you?" the voice continues, sounding eerily familiar yet foreign and distant at the same time. "Take a look," comes the order from the voice.
He looks up to where an image was suddenly projected on the wall. It's him. It's HIS image but then he does not recognize himself. He looks much younger than his current self. He's naked and glistening with sweat, thrusting hard into a younger man's naked body, gyrating and swirling as he picked up the pace.
"You always liked to fuck here in public, remember?" the voice says. Funny enough he can't quite remember but his curiosity piques. He actually has no reference point to what curiosity should feel like because it's a notion –or a mental state- he had known nothing about -nor experienced- in the past Sixteen years.
"Okay, I don't have time for games. Get me out of here," he demands.
"I can't," The voice says dryly.
"Why?" He lashes out.
"Because I'm not the one who brought you here," the voice recites.
"Who was it then?" his anger mounts.
"It was you. Your subconscious, your desires. You are the only one who could find the way out of here. " The voice explains.
"I… I don't have desires, I don't even know what…" he rises his voice but then stops mid sentence.
"Sure you do. You've got desires and emotions and needs. It's just that your desires are buried deep inside you. YOU buried them deep down years ago after THAT night,"
"The night everything changed," the voice says.
"I… I don't remember," he almost cries in frustration.
"At least you're trying Mr. Kinney," the voice replies.
"Who's Mr. Kinney? " he asks. "Is there anyone else but me here?"
"It's you Sir, " The voice sounds distant.
"I… I really don't get it," He mutters.
"You will as soon as your memory comes back," the voice says before it fades into the background.
"Hey… wait. Don't go, I gotta get out of here! I didn't ask for this, Can you hear me? Let me out!" He shouts at the top of his lunges.
The voice doesn't reply. A shimmering light flickers in the darkness instead. He turns around to watch the images that are projected on the black wall. A young man, blond, pale skin. Beaming smile. Is that the young man who appeared in the image he saw before? The man is walking around a room wearing a white dress shirt. His eyes are bright blue. Who is this man?
There's music pouring out of loud speakers. People are dancing, or at least that's what they seem to be doing. He can't tell. He's never seen people dancing.
Suddenly there's a loud explosion. People scream. The blond guy is hit by a white light and falls defenceless to the ground.
There's silence but suddenly someone screams 'Justin!'.It's more of an unbridled guttural cry rather than a scream. It's his OWN voice. He's calling this man. Who could that man be?
He can now see a person dressed in black leather jacket and black jeans trying to find his way in piles of rubble, ash and burnt wooden beams. Someone else is crying quietly in the corner, out of sight.
"Brian …." comes a muffled sigh out of the blond disheveled young man.
The next thing he knows the younger man is encased in his arms. He can FEEL his presence, his breath, his scent, his tears.
"Briaaaan," comes the urgent plea again.
Brian shivers and closes his eyes shut. When he flutters his eyes open it's as if he's been awaken from a dream. He hasn't had a dream in forever so he doesn't even know what it's supposed to feel like but he can only begin to imagine.
When he opens his eyes the space around him is still dark and quiet but he can suddenly have a more vivid image of THAT night in his mind's eye. An uncontrollable deep sigh escaped his lips. That night he was supposed to meet his –what? Partner? Lover? Soul mate?- That night he was supposed to meet Justin at the club for the fundraiser. Justin had broken up with him at that point. It wasn't the first time but unlike the first time this was a chance for Brian to prove to Justin how much he wanted him to stay. They were practically living together at that point but then HE had to ruin everything. It was his fault. HE was on his way to the airport to travel to Australia when he'd heard the news of the explosion at the club.
He couldn't see Justin at first. Everything was filled with smoke and dust and blood. He went in anyway.
And then…There he was. The distance between them closes faster than the speed of light at that moment. Brian can now FEEL the intensity of the moment as if it had just occurred.
Brian drops to the floor, feeling Justin's warm welcoming body under him. He can feel himself thrusting and pounding against the sweet soft skin, diving deeper and deeper into that pulsating sacred hole. Sweat is pouring down his brows but he doesn't stop. His breath becomes more rapid and labored but then just as he can HEAR Justin's distinctive hitch-the brisk passionate sound he makes before he comes- the room is swept over by wave a harsh white steely light.
The light hits the black wall creating a mirror effect reflecting Brian's own image, dressed in warn out dark grey sweater and sweat pants looking unkept and desperate lying face down on the floor grinding passionately against thin air.
FUCK!!!! A scream escapes Brian's lips at the bitter revelation that the whole thing is a figment of his imagination and that Justin is not here. If only he was able to see him again, hold him, make love to him…
"LET ME OUT OF HERE!!!" He screams again but then drops to the floor pinching the bridge of his nose in defeat as the room gets dark again but not as pitch black as before when he first entered this place.
"It's been a while since you came here. LITERALLY, isn't it?" The voice reapers sounding less robotic than before.
Brian lifts himself up to a sitting position feeling the corners of his mouth slightly rising in a smirks.
"Who are you?" he asks.
"You KNOW who I am. You see me all the time. In your dreams," The voice replies.
"I don't dream," Brian answers bluntly.
"There's no such thing. People need to have dreams," the voice answers. Brian feels as if the voice softens.
"I don't know much about THAT, I just try to get by," he says.
"Don't you want to get out of here first?" the voice asks after a slight pause.
"Sure I do but… it looks like there's no way out," Brian huffs.
"Need help?" the voice asks. A soft blue ray of light flickers suddenly.
Brian swallows hard. These words sound so familiar but he can't figure out where he'd heard them before.
"Come on don't give up now, You're half way there, " the voice sounds closer than before. Brian gets up on his feet and starts to walk up the dark winding corridor.
With each step Brian takes the blue ray of light gets brighter until it finally lights up the entire space.
Brian stops to take a breather and only then he realizes where he's at.
It's the club.
It's Babylon. The club and everything it represented seemed to be a faded memory of the past. A memory he didn't want to hang on to. He didn't care to have anything to do with this place after that horrible night.
"Can you hear me?" the voice rings loud and clear in his ears.
"Yes, I can hear you Justin..." Brian whispers under his breath. "Where are you? "
"I'm right here," Justin answers. "Right HERE,"
Brian reaches out to hold on to his lover. "And … by the way… I missed you," he moans as they break their kiss.
" I thought I'd lost everything," Brian says after a quiet pause.
"Not everything," Justin smiles resting his head and Brian's shoulder. "Let's go home now. It's been like an eternity since I've been there," he lifts his head to gaze into Brian's eyes.
"Someone once told me that eternity is not as as long as it used to be," Brian admits before pressing his lips to Justin's.
